Circus Magic
I spent my weekend at the Circus Magic convention in Williamsburg, VA. This was my second year going to Circus Magic.
I left home early Friday morning and got to Williamsburg around 9:00am. After checking in, I went to the Balloon Pre-Convention workshop. It was taught by Uncle Curt, DJ Ehlert and Dave Hill. I picked up a few new balloons and several ideas to use in my restaurant work.
That night, I did some shopping at the dealers, watched the balloon jam, and signed up for the American Clown Idol competition.
I started thinking about the American Clown Idol competition a few days before leaving for Circus Magic. I decided to do a one-clown skit starring Buzz Clownstrong. I had a few ideas written down, but not a completed skit. I scripted the skit in my hotel room before going to sleep.
On Saturday, I had to get up early to get ready for the American Clown Idol competition which began at 9:00am. I quickly realized I didn’t have any q-tips, which come in handy when putting on clown makeup. I was able to make due with what I had. I got to the convention about 20 minutes early and got to watch the end of the balloon competition. I could have entered the balloon and face painting competitions, but wasn’t sure that I could get up early enough.
I was one of two people in the American Clown Idol competition. The other contestant won last year’s competition. I went first and rushed a bit through my skit. It was more a bunch of puns than any real action. But, I heard them laugh and several people said I did good. I was a bit disappointed that my friends had missed the skit. The few I saw before the competition left to get coffee and the rest came down after it was done for the group pictures.
After the competition, I went back to my hotel to change, pack up, and check out. I missed one of the workshops, but that was OK. I spent my time on workshops on booking gigs and building a show. Both important for where I am. I also watched the Jr. Joeys (kids) perform in the Little Big Top Show. The evening was a dinner, auction, and show.
I left around 10:30 and drove home Saturday night. I could have stayed until Sunday, but there was only one workshop, so I decided to save money.
