It is the middle of winter and the days are slowly getting longer. The shortest day of the year came on the first day of winter, a few days before Christmas. The longest day of the year is months away in June.

OK, how many times have you heard a photographer say, “Smile and say, ‘Cheese’!”? I like to take pictures, but find that when I take a spontaneous, unposed picture of people, they often look better than the posed pictures. I don’t know how it happened, but I think that the attempt to get people to smile actually makes them look worse. Just look around the internet at pictures of kids and they seem to thing that smiling means showing as much of their teeth as possible.

I have never understood Groundhog Day. Today, February 2, 2011, marks the 125th annual weather prediction by the world famous Punxsutawney Phil in Punxsutawney, PA. News reports say that he didn’t see his shadow. Not a big surprise with the rain, snow, and ice in the Mid-Atlantic region.
