Sunrise and Sunset

Filed under: Life in General — Mike @ 8:05 am

Each fall, there is one day when I first notice that it is getting dark early. Normally, this is shortly after daylight savings time ends. Suddenly, the days seem shorter and it starts getting cold outside. For some reason, I am less likely to go out in the evenings.

Each winter, there comes the day when I realize that the days are a little longer. I have been taking evening classes and the other week I realized that it was a little lighter outside when I was in my car. This morning, I realized that it was no longer dark outside when I was driving in to work. I guess that the days are getting longer and that spring is on the way.

The forecast calls for a high in the 30s when the normal high should be close to 50F. That doesn’t feel like spring, but hopefully, it will come soon.

Websites Updated

Filed under: Websites, Life in General, eLearning — Mike @ 2:22 pm

I am a web developer. As such, I feel that it is only right that I have a personal website to use to both learn about developing websites and to publish some of my work. I have always struggled more with the content side of having a website than I have with the technical side.

Covered in Ice

The forecast yesterday called for mostly clowdy with some rain beginning in the afternoon. There was some talk about freezing rain, but they said that it would warm up and turn to all rain.

Winters in Washington, DC.

Filed under: Life in General — Mike @ 12:49 pm

I have been living in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington DC since 1996.  The one thing that I have come to expect is that we will see a variety of temperatures. The coldest days will get into the teens (or possibly single digits) and the warmest days will get into the 60 (or even 70s).  We may see some snow, but it will typically melt within a week.

Today was one of the colder mornings. The temperatures were in the low teens and the wind was blowing. About two weeks ago, it was actually colder with the morning low in the single digits. But between these two cold days, we have had a few warmer days. Last week, we had two or three days with highs in the 60s and even one day that got above 70.

Even with our warm days, I still long for the days when I can once again leave my jacket at home and enjoy spending time outside.

Proper Treatment of Volunteers

Filed under: Volunteer, Acting — Mike @ 9:19 am

On Saturday, I volunteered at a 30th Anniversary Gala. I frequently volunteer with various organizations, and this organization clearly didn’t understand how to treat volunteers. I was going to be a Pre-French Revolution Peasants to match their theme of of the Chateau de Versailles. They planned to costume all extras to fit their roles.
